I saw it and I thought it was really sweet. My guess as to why it doesn't have great attendance is that there is so much new stuff this season and it has really gotten a lot of buzz among other things like Spamalot and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, etc. It's not a huge show, but it has a lot of heart and it's really lovely. The cast recording is very good - there are some amazing songs in it. And Sutton Foster, Maureen McGovern, Megan McGinnis and Danny Gurwin are especially nice to listen to on the cd.

This is a real shame for Broadway. Though the show had its flaws, it was a heartfelt, intimate, original musical. There was an honest-to-God orchestra. It didn't rely on special effects or a catalogue of old pop songs. That a show like that can't survive is horrendous, as I'm sure it had little do with the fact that the reviews panned the book and moreso with a lack of flying witches. (Who come in a grand tradition of falling chandeliers, folding barricades, helicopters... no slam on Wicked!)
On a less imporant note, I just love the song "Some Things Are Meant to Be"... my heart!

^you're just looking at an excuse to bash the shows that have more things going for them than songs and a strong story. I like that song too.

On a less imporant note, I just love the song "Some Things Are Meant to Be"... my heart! That song is so sweet. I had so many tears rolling down my face at that point. Megan McInnis has such a pretty voice and she was a fantastic Beth! It's not that the other shows don't have their place too, and they're also good, but this show was really lovely - I really enjoyed it. But I guess it's a very competitive season. There has been so much opening! But also, I know what you mean. I mean I enjoy the big musicals just as much as the little ones, but I know what you're saying about the little ones not being able to survive when Broadway is being taken over by huge mega musicals and the millions of shows being created from old pop music. There definitely needs to be room for the smaller shows to be able to seen and given a proper life on Broadway.

There definitely needs to be room for the smaller shows to be able to seen and given a proper life on Broadway. Exactly! There's a place for big effects on Broadway, for sure. One of the best things about the recent Man of La Mancha revival was the amazing moving setpiece that formed the wall of the prison and would rotate to join or disonnect the stairs and also opened upward to allow the "sun" to shine down. (BSM and Marin Mazzie were *the* best things, but that setpiece was a big wow.) However, it wasn't the *setpiece* that got the several minute standing ovation on closing night. It was a brilliant performance of a legendary song - BSM's "The Impossible Dream", to be exact. (*drools*) The Vienna staging of my favorite musical, Elisabeth, involves a floorpiece that not only rises but rotates and folds, simulating a sinking ship at one point. The floorpiece is nice, it's a cool effect, but if the cast sat on stools downstage and sang the show, it'd still be my favorite. I think Broadway has a place for both Wicked and Little Women type musicals. And it's not just Wicked or Phantom (which is one of my absolute favorites) either. Avenue Q is a little musical, but it's out of the ordinary, not your typical musical. It's outrageous, has a parental warning sticker on the cast recording, and has the Sesame Street tie-in. It's a brilliant musical, for sure, but it's just not typical, and that gave it a lot of word of mouth and press. Little Women suffered, I think, from just being typical in the shadow of a lot of shows that can make their own press (as well as being heartfelt in the middle of the wrong audience cycle - Jane Eyre vs. The Producers, anyone??) It wasn't a show that could create its own noise, and probably required either a quieter season or more aggressive marketing. *sigh* Now I'm thinking of Jane Eyre.

Broadway needs to make room because there needs to be something for everybody. The smaller musicals can be just as good or better as the bigger ones.

It is so unfortunate... I've been hearing a lot of good things about it, and i never expected this show to be so short-lived! it has been in my see-list, and gosh, I feel so bad for Sutton Foster...

I was at the 2nd-last show, on Saturday night. Lots of fans in the audience, big applause for everyone's entrance, and a really enthusiastic curtain call!
I enjoyed the show, but wasn't blown away by it. I felt it was a fine adaptation, but didn't really seem to have a point - like, why do we need another adaptation of this story? I left feeling like, "Well, that was nice, but I wouldn't need to see it again."
That said, the cast was wonderful, and there were some very nice moments (yeah, I cried too!).
