As most of you know, this show is probably the biggest Broadway flop ever. It played only 5 regular performances in May 1988.
The Broadway cast included Betty Buckley (as Mrs White), Linzi Hateley (as Carrie), Sally Ann Triplett (as Sue), Charlotte D'Amboise (as Chris), Darlene Love (as Ms Gardner).
I got my hands on the score and though some of it is... well, let's just say it could be better, some of it is absolutely amazing! The scenes with mother and daughter are completely stunning!
I saw some clips of the show on the site which-I-won't-name-here and it was quite clear why the show got such horrible reviews it did.
I hope they will finally make a revival of this show, there's already so much good material in it and the stuff that didn't work are fixable.

It is one of my favorite shows! I have also seen video clips and I have a copy of the score and the original Workshop Script. I also have a few other things I won't mention here. I like the Broadway cast better than the London Cast only becasue I did not care for the way Barbara Cook played the mother. I much prefer Betty Buckley. The rest of the London Cast is the same as the Broadway Cast.

Betty Buckley was incredible as Carrie's mother! I've seen " And Eve Was Weak" performed by both of them and Cook wasn't bad or anything, it's just that Buckley was so much better. Cook's voice was a bit too colourless and weak for the song whereas Buckely's voice thundered through the song. That's one of the performances I wish I had seen live.

It needs a little tweaking in my opinion. Hopefully it would be good since we are in an era that Movies are becoming hit Musicals(hey, look how a hit Xanadu became because they tweaked around with the whole thing and made it entirely new).
Betty is amazing as Margret White! That woman knows how to play the role very well(funny since she was Mrs. Collins the PE Teacher in the Movie), and Linzi Hateley is great as Carrie and won an acting award for this role(beating other huge names at the time).

Well, CARRIE was a best-selling book before Brian De Palma made the movie... I hope they won't give the possible revival the same kind of treatment as they did with XANADU; make it more camp. But the scenes with the high school kids do need re-working! And not just a bit. The opening numbers of both acts need to be re-written, especially the horrible "Out For Blood".

Also change the costumes! The High School Kids hardly look like Teenagers at all! They looked like they walked in from Schumacher's The Lost Boys....

I saw some photos of the scene " Do Me A Favor" and I couldn't help but laugh: the guys were wearing leather pants and jackets and the girls were dressed in body stockings!!!

It's been 20 years this month since CARRIE opened - and closed - on Broadway.

There's a lot of information about CARRIE The Musical in Ken Mandelbaum's book "Not Since Carrie - 40 Years of Broadway Musical Flops". First there's a whole chapter about CARRIE's first preview performance in New York with short descriptions of the scenes. In the end there's also a chapter about creating CARRIE and about what went wrong and why. It is very interesting read. For some reason the auditorium of the Virginia Theatre (now the August Wilson Theatre) was painted black...

It'd be great to have a "Part 2" for this book, since the last musicals included in the first were pre-CARRIE. A kind of "And after CARRIE?". Anyway, back to CARRIE. It would be interesting to hear how different the version performed in the UK was from the version that finally was played on Broadway. I know there were some songs cut and some added, but which version worked better?
