This discussing has already been started in the Favorite Show/Actor(tress) thread so I thought we could move it here.

My definition of a musical is a play where singing and dancing has been added. The songs must be original so that the reason you go to see the show is the show itself not just who wrote the music. Now a show like Momma Mia where all the songs are ABBA songs I would call more of a review of ABBA songs with a plot semi-attatched.

^It's spelled "Mamma Mia!", fyi. I've seen you misspell it twice so I figure'd I'd tell you.
I don't really have a strict definition. Musical Theatre is a form of art, and art itself doesn't have a strict definition, so why does something that is art need one?

A play but w/ music and instead of using dialogues all the way through, much of the stories are told through songs, with dancing and others accompanying. That's my simple definition!

I don't really have a strict definition. Musical Theatre is a form of art, and art itself doesn't have a strict definition, so why does something that is art need one? I agree. Because some musicals don't have that much dancing in it although it must have song obviously. And they (singing and dancing) must compliment the underlying story or point.
