She actually started out as a singer she had begun training as an opera singer at the age of 12

She trained with Estelle Liebling... I don't know how long she trained for but she has a voice as she's been singing whenever she can... I don't think she'd forget training like that

Meryl Streep stated studying voice at 12 and kept it up through high school and college- she studied Drama at Vassar for 4 years and Yale for 2 and kept up training though her focus had switched to acting. She's done several musicals on and off Broadway including one called Alice in Concert at the NY Shakespeare Festival that's available on DVD, Happy End (Weill/Brecht) and Mother Courage and Her Children (Tesori/Brecht), she sang at a concert to benefit The Pubic Theater and you can hear her on several recordings and film soundtracks. She sings on the Postcards from the Edge OST, A Prairie Home Companion OST, The Philadephia Chickens OCR, Voices that Care (compiliation CD), For Our Children (compilation CD), and she also plays the violin. She was actually considered for the role of Evita in the film version of the show. You can hear a few clips on this site: www.meryl-streep.de/careervoice.htm

Given this info - I'm thinking she is an interesting choice for Donna. I can't wait to see/hear her sing something from the show.

I love Meryl Streep, but I doubt she would do good as Donna. ABBA's music is not just like any other kind of music you hear in musicals, not all musical singers fit to it - and I'm talking about pros! I saw/heard Helen Hobson, who is also an actress (not merely a musical singer), playing/singing Donna and it looked/sounded like they had forced Christine Daaé into an overall, put a drill in her hands and then threw her onstage telling her,"OK girl, the ball's in your court!" - and she was just out of her depth. That's exactly what I fear Meryl Streep would look/sound like, too.

I looove Merryl Streep but..she got a voice? :S I love Meryl Streep too! And yes, she definitely has got the voice to pull this role off! Her singing in A POSTCARD FROM THE EDGE, sounded fantastic. The first song, "You Don't Know Me" wasn't that much of a stretch but the second "I'm Checking Out Of This Heartbreak Hotel" (or what ever the name of the song was) was brilliant. She also sang in the opening scene of " DEATH BECOMES HER" and "Amazing Grace" during the end credits of " SILKWOOD". I'm not sure if she sang in the musical scene of STUCK ON YOU. And, she was considered to play the role of Norma Desmond in the world premiere production of SUNSET BOULEVARD, but Patti LuPone's performance in ALW's Sydmonton Festival won her (= Patti) the role. Streep can sing! And if she can't, she'll learn... (I don't think there's anything this woman couldn't learn...)

Fantasma posted this over in the Aida (there is a rumour) thread... I've reposted it here, before he had a chance to do it him self, with a URL because I've found some proof. (Hope you don't mind Fantasma!) And I read in the Harry Potter site that Julie Walters (Mrs.Weasley) will enter in the film version of the musical Mama Mia. Like I said in the Aida thread, I think she'd be a great Rosie. Proof of the casting... Julie Water's IMDb profile: imdb.com/name/nm0910278/The Movie's IMDb profile: imdb.com/title/tt0795421/

It certainly looks like Pierce Brosnan. Unless that picture is from a different movie... but Playbill is usually reliable, isn't it?
