It's going to Lord of the Rings.
Basically.
No good new musicals seem to have opened\are going to open up this year. So the Tony judges will have to turn to Canada.
LOTR is going to win the award anyway when it comes to Broadway.
No but seriously my money is on Tarzan for best musical. Two of the three Disney shows on Broadway are still running and I've heard good things about the Tarzan apes.
So!
That's my observation for the day.

No good new musicals seem to have opened\are going to open up this year. So the Tony judges will have to turn to Canada. ....the heck?! I try to see between 6 and 10 shows a year on Broadway, and usually see at least two of the nominees. So far, I have seen two of this coming year's frontrunners, and hope to see more if I do a trip to NYC in May. At this point, I have seen both The Color Purple and Jersey Boys. TCP is a good show - it's based on a solid work, and has an excellent cast. However, the score is a bit weak and it lacks the depth needed to be taken as seriously as the film. It stands a good chance of pulling a Spamalot and coming up from behind after losing out on something else, but I doubt it will win. So far, based on buzz and what I've seen myself, my money is on Jersey Boys to take the top prize. The book is solid, the cast are top notch, and the staging was fluid and graceful. While it may not take best book or score, it's rare to see people leaving the show without a smile on their face or a bad word. With what's left to open, Ring of Fire has been getting horrible buzz. The Wedding Singer and Lestat got mixed to negative reviews out of town, but in the case of the former, most of the problems seem to be fixable by the time the show opens in New York as long as the production team don't go slacking. The Drowsy Chaperone is also set to transfer in from out of town and open before the deadline, and got EXCELLENT press out west. Expect it to get a nom and possibly a win for one of the other big creative awards. And then there's... Tarzan may get a nomination, and considering the money going into the show (and pouring in - it will be the first show to open on Broadway in the black), it is definately going to be an attention getter. However, the film is one of Disney's less-impressive modern works, so unless the adaptation has something extra to offer, it won't get the prize. Mary Poppins, on the other hand, will very much be a contender for the awards in 2007, after it opens in autumn. Provided that the show isn't toned down or unnecessarily brightened up for American audiences (and rumour is heavy that it will be), this stark reimagining of the original works could sweep the leads. /on a side note, here's to Threepenny Opera getting Best Revival, and another Tony for Alan Cumming

Oh! Is the Drowsy Chaperone able elligible for the 2006 awards?
THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING!
I saw that out here in LA and I must say it was the funniest thing I have ever seen on stage. That should deffinitely win best musical, at least best book.
I had only heard mediocre to bad reviews of the Color Purple and I hadn't seen any for Jersey Boys so I kind of wrote them off.
I have a feeling that Sweeney is going to get best revival. Everyone is wowed by it and the cast is really good (well to my opinion). I need to hear the Threepenny Opera revival, if Alan Cumming is in it it should be good!

I hadn't seen any for Jersey Boys so I kind of wrote them off. Jersey Boys got across the board raves from the critics, and is being hailed as the only good Jukebox show from the last three to four years. I've been hearing good things about Sweeney (I was going to see it the last time I was in New York but thankfully decided to see Souvenir instead). Threepenny should be in the running, and Pajama Game should as well. I'm trying to think of any other major musical revivals from the past year, but titles are escaping me. =( 2007 will probably be the new production of A Chorus Line and the planned revival of West Side Story.

I just checked the opening date and Drowsy Chaperone is elligible for the Tony. With the trend in best musicals, it should win Best Musical. It is truly hillarious.
