^^ He's outshines his female partners when he sings solos and then they sing some (talking about Nicole and Renee - not saying they're bad), but he harmonizes really well with them - not making the other look bad but complimenting them.

Apparently he and the cast got mixed reviews according to broadway.com. There was one praising them (the first one) and then the others thought he ... ummm, didn't do so well and/or found something wrong/bad to say about the cast. I really can't see how that can be possible... Ah well - the critics.

Just returned from seeing 'Guys and Dolls' this afternoon. It was a good fun show and it was great to see a full house at the Piccadilly for a change. Enthusiastic reception to the show too, and not just for Ewan McGregor and Jane Krakowski.
Ewan has presence on stage, a lovely twinkle in his eye, cute bum!, good acting and a decent but not exceptional singing voice. He created a likeable and believe Sky.
Jane K sizzled! She can sing and act up a storm. You just didn't really notice the other Hot Box Gals when she was on stage with them. And I really liked the way she maintained having a cold all the way through, until she thought she was actually getting married!
Jenna Russell is a seasoned musical and straight actress and was also very good as Sarah Brown. She was not eclipsed by Ewan in any way. I also didn't think, unlike some comments I've read, that she looked far too old, she had the right look for the role I felt. Sour grapes maybe cos she gets to kiss the lovely Ewan?!!
Disappointed with Douglas Hodge as Nathan Detroit. Partly due to the direction for the character, but also that he doesn't have much of a voice at all. Its annoying when you think how many good musical performers there are out there.
The ensemble were generally good and energetic, particularly liked Sevan Stephen as Big Jule!
I had no problem with the set, unlike some critics. Yes it was done in part to look like the Donmar. But also the sewer was well constructed. A show should be more about the music, lyrics and performances than the scenery! And I didn't feel let down by the largely minimal sets, I hadn't been expecting dazzling sets anyhow.
The curse of the Piccadilly shouldn't hit this show, well not until there is a cast change at any rate! If they've gone into the black by then perhaps they should take the money and run! A show worth seeing and one I would see again if I can get a ticket, but not a show for me to get completely hooked on (phew!).
