Ah, thanks, that does make a lot of sense to me. Must say that I did love the show when I saw it on Broadway with the original cast and again this year.
I do agree about the special effects. I was particularly disappointed with the flying and I do hope they fix that over here. Cos it is so obvious that Elfie is on a platform and she is standing straight upright. There must be more that can be done whilst still allowing the actress to belt.
Maybe I benefitted in that before I saw the show I hadn't read the book but was, of course, very familiar with the film. Having subsequently read the book I find, and maybe because of bias towards the show, that I preferred the overall plot of the show. Perhaps cos some of the characters I was expecting weren't there. But it was interesting to see how they took the book and moulded it into a plot for the stage.
The lyrics for me aren't that bad. I've definitely heard many many worse. And I think the feel-good factor kinda takes you along. And I have listened to the CD countless times; DC sold a lot of CDs for a show not yet on in the West End!
I like the way in which you care about Elfie in the show and what happens to her. I think perhaps whether or not you care for Glinda depends on who plays her, I loved Kristin but I found Megan Kelty just irritating and her character didn't develop.
I didn't have a problem with 'Dancing Through Life' and then the lion cub, for me it showed that the exterior of Fiyero that he wanted to present to people wasn't the sum total of him; but also he was surprised at his own actions in helping too in those scenes.
I would restage 'As Long As You're Mine' though, too simplistic. I also found that from the CD I expected part of Glinda's engagement speech to be an aside more to herself rather than all directed to the crowd.
So,yes, I still do love the show and am definitely looking forward to seeing the show in the West End, but I'm quite prepared to acknowledge faults in it.
I must say that if the show was in Germany first then I would go there too! One of the advantage of german shows for me is that if they have naff lyrics then at least I wouldn't know!!! In that respect the Vienna CD of Jekyll & Hyde sounds better than the Broadway cast recording at least it doesn't have 'to kill on the steps of St Pauls requires a lot of balls' ARGHHH! Well if it does I can't understand it!!
