I can't help you with the Hotels question. But I do believe Wicked is Open Ended.

That depends on what you mean by cheap. There are rush seats, which are sold for £25 at 10 a.m. the day of the show. These are front-row seats and there are 24 available. Students can buy the best available seats on the day of the show for £25 each with valid student ID. The very cheapest tickets are £15, but they are far back in the balcony. You can buy those any time.

No advance bookings. The Apollo Victoria Theatre, where WICKED is running, is huge! One of the biggest theatres in the West End. As far as I know there's over 2000 seats in the house.

these 24 seats, available at the day of the show, sound great - but i think there are many people who want these tickets. is wicked sold out every day?

The show isn't sold out each day, but those tickets are. I would get there at least 30 minutes before they go on sale during the week, and earlier on weekends or in the summer. Or, best to try on a Wednesday when there's a matinee, because then there will be 24 tickets available for both shows, so if you don't care which show you see, you will have a better chance of getting the tickets.

You could try the travelodge website in advance as they sometimes have good prices for midweek if you book ahead.
Also try the Tourist Info cos they probably know a lot of the smaller hotels rather than the chains and these also may be a bit cheaper. Also the Earls Court area would be cheaper to stay in than Holborn but on the other hand, Holborn is very central and easy for the theatre.
I've stayed at the Strand Palace before. Friends of mine regularly stay at the Royal National.
