Hey everybody,
Just to let you know...
I received an email today from Edition Butterfly (Michael Kunze) asking that I remove the Elisabeth lyrics from the site. So as of today, the German and Dutch lyrics are gone. I am leaving up my English translation, since those ones were not written by anyone at Edition Butterfly!
I've always known this might be an issue that would come up, and my position is of course that if I'm asked, I will take them down. Hopefully it won't happen with all of the shows, but whichever ones I am asked for, I will have to do.
This is a completely profit-free site, so I've hoped that might make a difference, as I'm not making any money off having the lyrics here. But nonetheless, it is their right to demand that they be removed, and so I will comply!
Just wanted to let you know, in case you are wondering where they went.
Thanks, as always, for your support!!
Stacy

Did Tanz Der Vampire had the same problem too? The Translations of Jim Steinman's songs were translated by Michael Kunze and also Mozart! was done by Kunze too . Thanks for informing us on this and hope those pages I've mentioned doesn't go on fire.

Very sorry to hear that, but you're right it is their right to demand. This really sucks though.. I loved reading those lyrics!

But I won't be surprised now if they come back later about the other ones.

I hope they don't. Phantom lyrics are also copyright. I know because I own the official libretto. RUG owns them. Fingers crossed they don't remove them.

The Translations of Jim Steinman's songs were translated by Michael Kunze and also Mozart! was done by Kunze too. Actually, Michael Kunze didn't translate Steinman's lyrics. He wrote the whole libretto in English before he met Steinman in New York and asked him to compose the musical. After the songs were ready, Kunze wrote a new libretto in German (which he doesn't even call a translation but the original text). That's why Steinman has no copyright on the lyrics of Tanz.

I hope they don't. Phantom lyrics are also copyright. I know because I own the official libretto. RUG owns them. Fingers crossed they don't remove them. Unless the work has entered the public domain, all lyrics are copyright to their creators (or whoever holds the rights in their stead.) So, in theory, all of the copyright lyrics on this site could be taken down via proper request. A long while back, Cam Mack's people used to go nuts on Les Mis fansites over things like the title font or the Cosette logo. That seems to have subsided, but they could start up again anytime, just as RUG, Edition Butterfly, or any such rights holder could. RUG made a popular lyrics site take down all lyrics/libretti of RUG productions not too long ago (the same thing happened to the Elisabeth libretti, too.) As a site grows, so does the chance of running into people who are not okay with the use of their material. The OBW made an objection a long while back to the *cast lists* from their productions being published on a website. IIRC, they claimed that they were establishing their own cast archive; to this day, all that's there is an opening night list and maybe some replacements. I'd like to know why they think listing who was in their shows falls under their copyright, but that's the way it goes. MiladyDeWinter

I would love to resurrect this thread so that I can list copyright holders so that people would know who holds copyrights to, etc. so that this site won't run into trouble: The Really Useful Group : Holds rights for ALW's Shows Edition Butterfly: Holds rights for the libretto's of Elisabeth, Tanz der Vampire, Rebecca, Mozart!. Hankyu: Holds rights to anything Takarazuka related I can list more but I am too tired...
