Wicked
Apollo Victoria Theatre
Stalls Row A Seat 23
Wednesday 11th November 2009 at 2:30pm
Understudies: George Ure as Boq and Ashleigh Gray as Elphaba
I went to see Wicked on Wednesday, leaving home at 1:00am and arriving in London at 6:20am. I then stood outside the theatre with Samantha Rowles for 4 hours and managed to get one of the front row centre seats for £25.
Oliver was much better this time. I assume it's because he gets on really well with Ashleigh. As Long As You're Mine was pure magic - and I was in tears. David Stoller is Doctor Dillamond for me. He is just perfect in the role. Sam Kelly was a dissapointing Wizard. I prefer Desmond. I know it's the character's fault but still. Natalie Anderson started off being a little cutie pie and a really amazing Nessarose but didn't get evil enough in Act 2. She was far too sweet to be a Wicked Witch. But didn't pull off her sweetest like Sarah does. Harriet Thorp was not as good as Aileen or Nadine. Her "wingspan" and her mockery of the Glinda was amazing. I loved the way she changed her voice at different moments to suit the line. Her "a change in the weather" is the best I have seen it. She did the "ARRR" bit after she said the line, didn't shout for a long period of time, and so the into to I'm Not That Girl (reprise) was not drowned out... for once. Her "Wicked Witch" in Defying Gravity was totally different to the other versions but I still liked it.
Now... for my second favourite performer. George Ure. He was amazing as Boq. Every line was delivered perfectly. He has the right personality for the role too. He is just magic to watch. It's the first time Boq has really stood out to me. I loved it.
My favourite performer was our Elphaba... Ashleigh Gray. WOW!!!! I have never been able to connect with Elphaba before. Usually I identify totally with Glinda but Ashleigh was just amazing. She had my favourite parts about Idina's Elphaba and mixed them in with her own awesomeness. I cried during all her solos and most of the songs when she was onstage. She really touched my heart. It was the most amazing thing ever. I haven't cried that much since I saw Sarah as Glinda. The standbys really are amazing.
I have to say that Dianne's funny faces were awesome and her Popular was as fantastic as always. She lit up the stage and I actually preferred her trolley entrance this time. She is very good at portraying the mature Glinda and I really felt her pain during I'm Not That Girl (reprise). My favourite moments are when she mocks the other characters.
