I went to see Sarah and had the most amazing time. Here’s how I rate the cast, in order of preference.
Sam Kelly as The Wizard: He was AMAZING at stage door and really kind to me but he just doesn’t really get across this personality in the role. He gives a rather bland performance and it’s something about his vocals that I don’t really like. I much preferred Desmond in the role.
Alex Jessop as Boq: He isn’t really Boq for me. I much prefer George Ure because he puts so much of himself into the role and is believable as this mere munchkin. Again there is something about his voice which I’m not totally keen on.
Alexia Khadime as Elphaba: Poor Alexia! I think she was still recovering from her illness. Her voice was really off and she kept doing these awful sections where she just blurred all her words together. She has an amazing accent and is amazing in the role, but I couldn’t help but feel let down by her. It’s such a shame since I know she can be much better. Also, having seen Ashleigh now, it was going to be hard for me to see Alexia in the same way that I used to.
Natalie Anderson as Nessarose: Natalie is amazing. I loved her a lot more this time. I think she really does portray the pregnant doginess quite well and she does seem very needy. Her deep voice is slightly off-putting but she can’t help that. And her “it was Elphaba” went on for ages, which always amazes me. Loved her “jewelled shoes” again. I think Caroline is still my favourite though, because she was my first and I can remember really liking her.
David Stoller as Doctor Dillamond: This man is just perfect. All I can say is that he is totally amazing in this role. I don’t think there will ever be a better Dillamond. His bleating fills the theatre and he is so adorable, which allows the audience to sympathise with the character even more. Love him.
Oliver Tompsett as Fiyero: I’ve seen him three times now and every time I have really liked him but at this performance…. with Sarah…. WOW!!! The chemistry between them was fierce. My favourite part of the show. Whenever they were on stage together they were so cute. They kept smiling and giggling to each other. I felt they were meant to be together. It was a tragedy for me when he went off with Alexia. The two of them were such cutie pies. I loved it. Also, it was weird going from seeing Loz’ dream team to having only one member of that team perform. Haha. I can tell why she likes him though.
Sarah Earnshaw as Glinda: Surprisingly not my favourite performer, mostly because I knew I loved her before I went. She is the best Glinda. Her trolley entrance is still absolutely adorable and her little hamster squeaks were amazing. She is the most gorgeous woman in the world and everything about her just blows me away. I couldn’t help but have a huge smile on my face whenever she came on stage. Thanks Goodness was FIT and just perfect in every way. Popular was great also. My only criticism is her comic timing. Dianne is funnier and makes me laugh more. Sarah takes the role really seriously and goes for authentic delivery of the lines, which is good, but Dianne is a little more different and so a lot funnier. It’s still amazing to cry at Glinda though, because you don’t expect to empathise with her.
Harriet Thorp as Madam Morrible: She was so phenomenal I can’t even begin to explain it. All her speeches just blew me away today. She has a very cute and cuddly side to her which can turn evil at any moment. Perfect for the role. Her “Wicked Witch” in Defying Gravity is so unique that it is just amazing. Her “I hope you prove me wrong” cracks me up. She is the master of using different voices and this is the thing that I found most endearing about her.
A few comments on the ensemble: Sean Parkins was amazing in the ensemble. He just was. He really seemed to get into character and is a fabulous dancer (which is why he is dance captain I suppose). George Ure was also incredible awesome in the ensemble and Lee’s ribbon dance in One Short Day was mesmerizing. Missed Aileen during Thank Goodness but her replacement, Shirley Jameson, was the best midwife I have seen. Really natural in the role.
And... I still thank Kenny for introducing this musical to me.
