Cleopatra, the last egyptian queen !
The last creation of Kamel Ouali, "Les Dix Commandements" and "Le Roi Soleil" choreographer .
I don't like this guy, overwelmed by unjustified self estim and a less than talented work in the popular french variety tv-show "Star Academy" !
But this time, I have to admit he did a great job !
Oh, "Cléopatre" is not a traditional musical : it's a visual show !
The dancing numbers and the setting are the main elements of the play. Dozens of half nude male dancers jump everywhere in a luxurious set ! And for once, the choreography is a part of the action and serves the development of the scenario.
Can we call this a play ? The authors decided to see in the egyptian queen a pre-figuration of the modern woman ! It's an option ! Why not ? But why the lines and the lyrics are so desperatly dull ? Not a really meaningful sentence or line in the repetitive songs ! After the desastrous lyrics of "Le Roi Soleil", Lionel Florence and Patrice Guirao should retired !
A musical ? The music is nothing but a puzzle of ordinary radio tunes in the now-a-days mood ! Not surprising, about ten writers and composers "worked"(?) on the score ! And none of the actors can sing or act properly ! Except Dominique Magloire in the part of the Great Priest : she is terrific with her deep and strong voice, the only one worth of a musical ! She steals the show to the leading singer Sofia Essaïdi, beautiful woman but uninspired actress !
At the end, a poor musical but a great dance staging !
