Das Musical Mozart! in Busan Korea 2010 3/27 matinee/evening
Wolfgang Mozart : Park Euntae/Im Taekyung (evening)
Leopold Mozart : Seo Beomseok
Nannerl Mozart : Bae Haesun
Collerado : Min Youngki /Yoon Hyungryul (evening)
Constanze Weber : Kim Heesun-Alt
Cacilia Weber : Lee Kyoungmi
Waldstatten : Shin Youngsook
Schikaneder : Oh Sangwon
Before I saw it I read a lot of reviews of this production They varied a lot depends on person. Some said it had too many scenes and blackouts and not strong structure of conflict to really enjoy so it's kinda boring and long. Some said it's worth the ticket price even with this great cast and this great tunes only which is actually most people praised for with no objection
Its runtime is 2h 45min. I heard from my Japanese friend that Japanese one is about 3h 15 or 20min. so I thought they really did a hard job to make it short for Korean audience who is not that familiar with a long show. and I'd like to think they did a good job on that.cuz I didn't get bored at all (I got bored several times watching the whole show of Hungarian one on Youtube) and I eventually got what Mr.Kunze wanted to say through the show. but the problem still remained. cuz the book was like I was reading(watching) Mozart's biography which has too many stories. and it may fit 10 episode-series drama more to enjoy the book easily. What I'm saying is the book became more unkind to 2h 45 min.show. They shortened each scenes if it's possible and cut off if it's not totally necessary. so except Mozart and his father, the other roles looks very small and not big a deal.
The lyric itself is really good it's obviously meaningful. on the other hand, it could be difficult a little too for those people who can not catch between the lines quickly......... so it's not the show you can follow easily with knowing nothing about the characters and synop. especially, who Amade is and the precondition of conflict between Amade and Mozart. The idea of making Amade is really brilliant I must say.
I saw 2 times in a row so I got to understand most( lol) of it. I just presume the translation job was the most hard job on this show. BTW What does Saushwanz mean?? I used the google translator, in vain. I still don't understand why exactly Mozart made himself foolish singing <Sauschwanz von Drecken>happily in front of many people and the lyric for this song in Korean is done figuratively (or maybe too directly from the original lyric??) I think korean lyrics for other songs are good. My eyes got teary when I heard <Gold von den Sternen>due to the lyric. I also like <Hier in Wien><Was f? ein grausames Leben>a lot <Ich bin ich bin musik>is not bad. The more listen, the more I feel meaning of it.
As for tunes, as I said already, People were very thankful for the tunes and for making the Korean cast recording. I like every songs though, songs for Colloredo and Mozart are amazingly good. after I saw the show, I got kind of addicted to it I got goose bumps even at the instrumental part of <Wie kann es m?lich sein> on that day LOL
Sets were good in general, simple and pretty.they used projection properly. I didn't like the Weber's house though. I liked every sets Colloredo was on stage
Lighing was really good for me. Maybe it's a style for dark European musical?? They used neon and noctilucent lightings properly to the right place it's so stunning and went well with costumes and props in harmony
Choreography was not bad as well. It seemed I saw some style from dvd Elisabeth. I guessed they followed the original choreography of Wien one to a few scenes and had variation to the rest in their own way
Costume was very good. I could tell they definitely did not skimp on it. They looked fancy and gorgeous at scenes where they should look it. For some reason I liked the unique big hat of maids and their dresses
and finally the Cast.
First, I coudn't see Jung Sunah(the main cast) as Constanze. She is the most promising actor in Korean musical theater. She never failed to blow me away so far. She played mimi in Rent, Kira in Xanadu, Deena in the new Dreamgirls etc. I bought the tickets after checking her name as Constanze of course, but it was changed and I was upset when I noticed at the theater but I had to move on quickly to enjoy the show fully. After the shows, I found this character the most vague role in the show. I am not sure where to blame among translation, the alt. actor's acting, the book.
Wolfgang Mozart : Park Euntae
He is sort of a newbie but became a popular actor due to this musical Mozart! I heard he really did pull off all songs for mozart live on stage and live is better than cd one even. I validated right away after the song<Wie wird man seinen Schatten los> with a big big hand. The best scene was <Warum kannst du mich nicht lieben?> he cried at the end. His acting plus this song's lyric made it more moving scene. I really impressed by it. He managed to carry this feeling till the end successfully. He got standing ovation.
and Im TaeKyung
Visually He looked like more Mozart. He has so beautiful voice as to cure any disease in me if I have lol in Act 1, He seemed so natural to play Mozart that I thought he didn't really do acting but in Act 2, I preferred Euntae's analysis to his at the moment. Later I thought he just tried more to show us the concept of suffering himself from his genius and the kid playing Amade in evening was quite bad at acting so it didn't come together a little. He got standing ovation as well
I liked Im Taekyung's act1 and Park Euntae's act2 ^^
Leopold Mozart : Seo Beomseok
He is a known actor and good at acting basically.Funny thing about this character is that I felt sorry for him more than Colloredo. You could tell Colloredo was a suffering person obviously. Leopold seemed very concerned about Mozart and loved him at face value. but actually he seemed he had hugh ego and a control freak so didn't need any advice and never accepted others cuz he was so good enough than others. Seo Beomseok did a nice job.
Nannerl Mozart : Bae Haesun
Cacilia Weber : Lee Kyoungmi
I was thankful that both okayed to play this small roles. Bae haesun played Eva in Evita and the princess in Aida and Lee Kyoungmi played Rosie in Mamma mia. I like Both since I saw those shows
Waldstatten : Shin Youngsook
I really liked her as this role at this time. I've seen her a lot since 2002 in Korean Romeo and Juliet musical. This role really fit her voice I think and she nailed perfectly and she got big applause as much as Mozart got at both times
Collerado : Min Youngki /Yoon Hyungryul (evening)
Min Youngki is Korean first Romeo from the Korean one and basically has many fans and doing a lot of shows. That's why he couldn't played in the beginning due to playing other role in other show -_-;;; but He was better than Yoon Hyungryul.
Yoon Hyungryul is a lot younger than Youngki and lacked charisma as Colloredo. He is a nice singer though.
Overall I really enjoyed the show. and I was glad I bought 2shows in a row and if it will play in Seoul again after the tour, I will surely buy tickets. I guess this show is more enjoyable and thankful to sentimental and emotional people.
