A question I've wanted to pose for ages... Do you know why some lyrics were changed between the Vienna and the Hamburg production? I've got the Vienna recording, and I like most of the lirics that were changed... (Particularly "der letzte Schritt") I must admit I don't really know the Hamburg texts, but what does "Engel der Muse" mean?? I think "Engel der Lieder" was already ok... (But I am no German mother-tongue, and I may be wrong..)

Engel der Muse = Angel of the muse. I don't understand why they changed it, Engel der Lieder (Angel of songs) was fine for me and sounded better. But... Now when I think of it, I think the reason is the thing called synchronization. German dubbers always try to make the lyrics so that they look (at least a bit) like the actors would really say them. For example 'Muse' matches 'music' better than 'Lieder' does. Personally I don't like the whole system, but perhaps I'm just not used to it, for here we tend to use subtitles instead of dubbing. I've tried to search the German lyrics and in some bits also to listen to them myself, but especially in the Vienna recording I can't hear the words. There are some differences, I notice them when listening, but just now I don't recall any. It would be nice to see the libretto, is it available anywhere in internet? Btw, would anyone have also the swedish lyrics of Operafantomen for me?

Well, my german is not that great to notice too many changes, and maybe there aren't many. But so far, the ones that i noticed would be:
Hamburg: Engel der Muse (why not Engel der Musik, i have no idea...) Vienna: Engel der Lieder
Hamburg: Phantom der Oper es noch keiner sah Vienna: Ganz nah ist das Phantom der Oper da
There might be others, but i gotta listen more to find out.

As far as I know, for the movie it was necessary to synchronise (?) the lyrics with the movements of the lips of the actors; however some German texts had already been changed. That's what I don't understand.. As a side-note... If you saw the Phantom movie in another language... How did you find the translations???

I only saw the german version of the phantom in the cinema and I´m looking forward buying the DVD in September that I can listen the original sound. Probably I´ll prefer that. Though I like Uwe Kröger do I not like him as the Phantom! Jana Werner surprised me as a very good Christine! Carsten Lepper who I saw live as Raoul in Stuttgart disappointed me a bit in the movie. But in October they will start the Phantom live on stage in Essen after AIDA will finish at the end of July! I´m very curious who will sing then!!!

September?! Bitte, don't say it'll come to Germany then, I thought I could buy the DVD in July when I'm going to Hamburg... I want to have POTO in German, the German soundtrack is better than the original.

Darn, then I must buy some other version and just be happy with the German soundtrack. The Finnish DVD (thank God we don't tend to dub anything...) will be published in August, and I thought that was late...
I like Kröger quite a lot, at least he's better than Gerry Butler. Butler's got a nice voice if you're watching the movie, because then you have so much more to concrentate on, but just listened on cd you'll notice how weak it is compared to other phantoms. Kröger at least can sing.

I can't understand what's taking them so long, even in Sweden the DVD is coming in June. I just ordered that version, it's got 2 discs extra stuff in addition to the movie itself, but the score is only in English. Perhaps I can survive with that... How could it be released in Greece in April if even in the US it was released in May 3rd? I thought Americans always have everything first. Well, on the other hand I thought the DVD would take more time to be released in Finland than in Germany, so perhaps I'll stay quiet.

We got it in May as well... Before the American!! However, the movie went quite unnoticed, both in the original version as well as with the Italian translations... So I assume we will find it soon enough at 9,90 Euro with some magazine...

But on the other hand the film was released in Greece on December 10th, when in other countries (i.e. France) wasn't released until January ;D
