...or, to be precise "Juliet & Romeo", has been composed by Riccardo Cocciante, the author of "Notre-dame de Paris", in cooperation with the lyricist Panella, who wrote the Italian lyrics for Notre-dame. Cocciante presented his work at the Coliseum in Rome a couple of weeks ago: he alone was on stage and sang & played every part of it. The comments on the preview were very varied, from "boring" to "masterpiece". (I'll look for some links to post, if you're interested) The full show should open in June 2007 (long way to go...) at the Arena di Verona. Being really honest, I have got two issues with it: - I don't really like NddP, so I don't know what to expect from this "Juliet & Romeo" - Why write another "Romeo & Juliet" when the French version was so successful and is quite recent? Some fans (like me) could get confused...

Why you say? Because no one seems to be interested in writing original material anymore. Romeo and Juliet is probably the most overdone material known to mankind. Maybe he's looking for the appeal/popularity the story has in hopes of securing a hit?

There's a French Romeo & Juliette musical, there is a Polish Romeo & Julia musical, and then there's West Side Story, based on Romeo & Juliet... I think we've got enough Romeo & Juliets for a while...

I think we've got enough Romeo & Juliets for a while... And countless other musicals that are out of the mainstream, as well as books, movies, etc... I understand that. The point I wanted to make is that the story is loved and has been rewritten countless times. It seems he was picking a "safe" story, one he knows is well liked. You can apply this with other stories besides Romeo and Juliet.
