Did anyone happen to catch the programme last night on BBC1 "How do you solve a problem like Maria"? ALW held open auditions for the part of Maria....a panel of judges whittle it down to 10 and then viewers get to vote for who they want to win the part. Is it just me or does anyone else think this is a really strange way for ALW to cast? I guess the programme might bring more people to the show and generate more money for it...but still....I found it a bit odd. Any thoughts?

Well the reason we are having this show is for one reason only. Andrew Got a hollywood actress to play maria but then lost her because they had a little fight or something. I foget the name of the actress but she was a big name star anyway. So Now he needs to find a Maria. Although it is a bit odd, It's not like Andrew to do something like this. BUT i LIKE IT!

The actress was Scarlett Johanson (sp?), I think the problem was her movie schedules or something. I like the programme too, I just found it a bit of an odd thing for him to do....I hope the public vote for a suitable Maria though =S

I think the main overriding reason is publicity! And I guess this is a 'cheap' way of reaching a lot of people across the country. Because of the nostalgia and fondness with which the Julie Andrews film is viewed and that some people may give the stage show a miss because they already have the film and have seen it a hundred times, an extra publicity push is probably what the producers are after. I think with the casting of Emma Williams as the alternate, ALW has already put a safety net in place in case a decent Maria isn't found. I hope the 'Maria School' is going to teach acting as well as singing cos being able to sing like a dream is no good at all without being able to act the role convincingly and that's something the voting public isn't likely to see apart from how the would-be Maria's put across a song on TV. Its something fun to watch on a Saturday night though Hoping to get tickets to be in the audience for one of the live shows (the first 2 are not live) though it was difficult to find a Saturday I wasn't already at the theatre

What I don't understand is what ALW has to do with "The sound of music". It's not one of his shows, so why is he in charge of the casting?

He's producer. He can by the rights to the show. Just like the way someone could buy the rights to Elisabeth and perform it. He bought the sound of music rights and is now going to direct, cast and produce it.

Sounds like fun!
I wonder if the idea will jump the pond, I wouldn't mind having a competition with actual singers (stupid American Idol....)

Is there a website where those of us who can't see the show can maybe see some videos?

www.bbc.co.uk/maria/The Official Website. Hikagekun, it's open auditions just like american Idol. They are not all trained singers. That's what makes it so odd for ALW to do.

The final talent pool for the show has been pre-selected to be a group of people that ALW "can work with", and the alternate Maria can go on up to six times a week. ALW may be weird, but he's not stupid.

the alternate Maria can go on up to six times a week. It'll be fun to see what Actors' Equity have to say about the "alternate" being the one that goes on 6 times a week. I love Emma Williams, and think her casting's inspired - I can't wait to see her! Rachel Barrell for replacement Maria Rainer, anyone?

Rachel Barrell for replacement Maria Rainer, anyone? I'm wondering if perhaps the contract Emma Williams signed isn't some strange version of a lead's contract. And that the contracts the perspective Marias on the show signed (& will sign for the musical) state that they could only be going on twice a week. So in other words, Emma Williams, although being refered to as the Alternate is really the primary. And the Reality Show is trying to find an Alternate. I hope I am making sense LOL

This show was surprisingly entertaining, enjoye it alot more than expected - didn't hurt John Barrowman was on the judging pannel!
Interesting to read here about the alternate, knew there might have been something behind the scenes! lol. ALW looked so stressed etc was quite amusing, and no doubt things will get worse before they get better for him!
