In the 90s they made a play of LOTR for a summer theatre in Helsinki, it was played in a fortress island in front of Helsinki. The play was over 5 hours long... My brother and mother saw it! What a pity that I was only 7 years old at a time and not yet introduced to LOTR or maybe I could have seen it, too. Apparently it was awesome. There was a recording that we had (on a C-cassette... ah, those days) and I listened to it through all of my childhood (since I got obsessed with LOTR the book pretty soon afterwards), and I really liked the music and still do. The municipal theatre of Jyväskylä did a very much shortened production of it some years ago, and I saw it. Not nearly as good as the original 6-hour thing would have been, but still it was nice to see it as the songs were so nostalgic to me.

Like I was saying to Stephen, over all I like the London version of Lothlorien to the Toronto one. But Toronto's version was good too. The new one is just *that* much better, perhaps, more polished.

I like the London music better but I like the Canadian Cast better so far... Specifically the Toronto Galadrial. I found she was more powerful and there was more personality in her voice.

Alright: The show the wanted got good reviews and good thing said about the show...But there was obviously those nay-sayers... well - you can see for yourself. for more of the reviews: www.theatre.com/story/id/3007834So here are some bits of the reviews. "When I saw Matthew Warchus’s production in Toronto last year, I was dazzled and delighted by its ingenuity and visual invention. I was also frustrated by its slower, muddier passages, unimpressed by some key performances and deeply disappointed by its bungled climax. Happily, almost everything that was wrong has been put right.....Go with an open mind, an open heart, and wide-open eyes, and prepare for enchantment.” Sam Marlowe of The London Times" "I entered Drury Lane as innocent as any hairy-toed hobbit. I emerged three and a quarter hours later sceptical as to the main matter but hugely impressed by the manner of Matthew Warchus's production." Michael Billington of The Guardian "I'm sorry to report that it remains a thumping great flop..my 14-year-old son - exactly the age and sex this show needs to attract in order to survive. Unfortunately he hated it even more than I did. Its run, I fear, will be nasty, brutish and short." Charles Spencer of The Daily Telegraph "The attempt to condense the 20th century's most popular epic into three hours has resulted in an empty-headed and messy extravaganza that will appall established fans and baffle newcomers. Neither musical nor play, The Lord of the Rings feels most of all like a theme park stage show, or an extended interlude from the Eurovision Song Contest." Kieron Quirke of The Evening Standard "Adults will find it difficult to suppress open laughter at this show's Portentous Moments. Corny is hardly the word...Cod. Cod. Cod. After this Rings, it is no wonder the North Sea is empty.” Quentin Letts of The Daily Mail So yes, it got the expected crap-reviews... But eh, who knows how it will do? Personally, I think with it being (somewhat) shorter and completely fixed from the Toronto show: I think it will do a lot better in London than it did in Toronto (and here's hoping for a Cast Album)

There is a new video: "The Crack of Doom". If this is really the show (not post-production of the video) then it's a visual masterpiece!

they've re-worked it a bit, but that's the same general scene that was in Toronto if I remember correctly

Anyone going to see LOTR in the next week-ish. Micheal Therriault is out as Gollum. William Hutt - the actor who passed today (see thread in the Broadway/Canada, section), was a mentor of his at the Stratford Festival of Canada. According to my local news (featuring an interview with Therriault --- even if they goofed the spelling of Gollum) he left London on Sunday.
