I can: MARTIN GUERRE (several re-writes, not sure if they actually closed the show to incorporate the changes...) SUNSET BOULEVARD (closed for 3 weeks in the West End) and in a way also: STARLIGHT EXPRESS

SUNSET BOULEVARD (closed for 3 weeks in the West End) and in a way also: STARLIGHT EXPRESS I knew about Martin Guerre, but I thought they closed completely then re-opened at much later date in a different venue. Didn't know about Sunset, thanks.

No, MARTIN GUERRE opened in The Prince Edward Theatre and went through several re-writes. It closed there about 1,5 years later (not sure how long it actually ran). A very different version of the show opened as a tour version in the UK in 1999 and this was the version which toured the USA as well.
I managed to see MG about 7 months into its original run in London and I really liked it. By that time it had gone through at least one re-write, since there was a new song there and at least one song and 2 characters had been cut. The show was so much better than LES MIS or MISS SAIGON. Never saw the touring version, but based on the cd the show lost a lot with the changes, the new version isn't even half as good as the 'original' one.
As for SUNSET, it closed in March 1994 and re-opened in April 1994. All the changes they made to the show for L.A. and Glenn Close were incorporated into the London production during this time.
And when SB closed in March '94, they had La LuPone playing the lead, and when it re-opened, Norma was played by Betty Buckley.

MARTIN GUERRE (several re-writes, not sure if they actually closed the show to incorporate the changes...) SUNSET BOULEVARD (closed for 3 weeks in the West End) and in a way also: STARLIGHT EXPRESS The difference between the first two and the last? Starlight Express turned a profit in all of its European incarnations. And to make matters worse, GWTW are already offering £10 seats on lastminute.com - not the sign of financial success as tourist season is heating up and late spring bank holiday weekend is on the horizon.

I love the movie to death but.... it can't work as a musical...it just can't.... I can see this close soon...my regards to the actors involved, sorry, ! Believe it really can't. There's a french version of GwtW by Gerard Presgurvic and its boring as hell. I don't like the story nor the movie...and the musical just made it worse...
