According to Michael Kunze's international site, which Firefox claims was updated about a month ago, Elisabeth has outsold Tanz by about five million tickets; Elisabeth is also the largest grossing German-language musical ever. By statistics (and there are three types of lies: lies, d**n lies, and statistics), Elisabeth is the bigger show by a long shot. Tanz would have a huge way to go to make up the difference, and Elisabeth isn't slowing down any time soon.
That being said, I think it's like trying to compare Phantom (the highest grossing entertainment ever) and Les Mis in many respects - they're both wildly popular on an international scale and growing. They're going to be a staple of global theatre for years, if not decades to come. You can pit them against each other, but it all comes out in the wash.

I have to agree with you ! Although Tanz has a cult status, it doesn't come near as Elisabeth. Look at this: It opened in Vienna then Hungary, Sweden, The Netherlands, Japan and Stuttgart. Sold a lot of copies of cast recordings(I am not 100% on this), had a revival that was closed and taped for worldwide audiences. The DVD itself had an award. I think the show won an IMAGE award. Also this is a new thing but I am seeing people cosplaying their favorite Elisabeth characters, mostly a lot of Sissi's Star Dress(I want to be Luigi so bad!). Well back to topic with Tanz, any Hungarian speakers could translate whats on the site please because all I am seeing is a cast list.

Hmm, I'm in Vienna the next summer and it's only a couple of hours by train from there to Budapest, which I presume is the city where they perform Tanz... Or then I could combine my future trip to Berlin with a little trip to Hungary.

Well, I don't actually speak Hungarian but I think I can understand it a little. The premiere is planned to be on the 30th of June 2007 and the list you see on the site is about what kind of actors they are looking for different roles.

Well that settles it as to where I'm going next summer!!! And yes, its not that far from Vienna to Budapest by train, I think its only a couple of hours from (vague) memory. And Budapest is lovely. I wonder what theatre it'll be in and if it will be in 'rep', cos at the Opera House they have about 4 shows at any given time (including musicals) and so a show only does maybe 5 shows a month. The info on the site looks much like the audition info of what they are looking for in the characters I've seen in various places for german shows. Hopefully the site will have more on it later on in the year. Brill news, Tanz in Berlin and in Budapest I shall be happy but broke!!

There are only a couple of names I recognise in the cast, Akos Tihanyi and Roman Zoltan. Akos is a really good dancer so I'm sure he'll make a good vampire solo dancer Its at the Magyar Theatre in Budapest, only seats 650 people at a time! Roll on July in Budapest (got my tix already!).

Wow, vampbear, how do you manage running around Europe seeing shows, do you possess a secret oil well in your backyard?

No oil well, just a black hole in my creditcard Don't drink (much), don't smoke! Mortgage interest rate not too high at the moment. Cheap flights also help, got £52 return to Berlin for May Most of my holiday/weekend trips are to the theatre

I noticed that piece of news a while ago on Máté's fan website, and the official site for the production confirms the Herbert part, though doesn't say anything about Krolock. I'm not entirely sure what I think of the idea of Máté as Krolock, but as Herbert? Yaaay! I really want to find the money to go to Hungary, though it's difficult as I have enough foreign trips planned as it is...
