Can anyone tell me why Szemenyei János stopped playing Alfred? Wasn't he originally the first understudy? I'm just puzzled because it seems like he's quite a big name actor already and judging from this clip that I just found www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuFYr4jRkvU his portrayal must have been very impressive. This is one of the most beautiful versions of For Sarah I've ever heard.

I don't know... I could ask around if someone knows. Could be that he just has other engagements. He is on the cast list, he just hasn't been performing the role this summer. Same goes for Nagy Sándor, who is too busy with other shows.
It's a bit difficult to judge just based on a concert clip, but somehow János doesn't strike me as my kind of an Alfred... And while he has a nice voice, it sounds to me like he might have trouble keeping up a good vocal performance doing the role night after night. I can't explain what gives me that impression, just something. I could be wrong of course. Here and there he has problems hitting the right notes, though I do know that song is hellishly difficult to sing.

While we're on the topic of Oerte, I just came across Mihálka György's version. A professionally recorded track can be heard if you click on the "Galeria" part of the official website (Magyar version). It's beautiful to say the least. I hope he turns out to be great in the role.

Thanks for the hint, I usually turn off the music so I wouldn't have noticed it at all. He does sound (and look) sweet and I hope I get a chance to see him in the role, although Alfred being younger than I am makes me feel a bit old.

The same goes for Sanyi who is rumoured to return to the vampires in winter. György Mihálka was cast to "replace" Szemi but he is not scheduled to have more shows at this point although I kinda like his version of Õérte.

OMG! The cast for the December/January shows was announced today and guess who is going to join the cast as Herbert: Máté Kamarás (used to play Death in Elisabeth in Vienna)! ;D Amazing!!! I can't wait to see Máté on stage in this role, his Herbert will rock for sure!

Luckily I'm in the city still on that evening, let's see if there's something that can be done. *grin*

I'd been wondering if he'd ever play the role! He's been on the cast list since the production opened, but no shows until now. But I guess they finally needed him as they started running out of Herberts, since Pirgel Dávid at least is getting more and more busy with other productions, too.

So, apparently the Belgium production of Tanz will be a transplanted version of Vampirok Balja? musicalinfo.hu/index.php?cikk=584I'm REALLY confused. To begin with, why did they even bother holding auditions if the thing was precast anyway? Also, would the locals not be irritated if half the cast members have strange accents for Dutch? Maybe they can just perfom it in Hungarian with surtitles ala Operett Szinhaz. I just don't get it. Still, for a 4 month run, I guess that this is the most economical way of doing things (though moving Oberhausen might be cheaper unless they have other plans for that production). I'm a little disappointed because I'd rather have a brand new production (maybe with Stanley) but I must admit, it'll be a real treat for the Belgians if they get to see Geza's Krolock.

I've seen an announcement for the Belgian auditions and some other Hungarian websites seem to say that it's only the design, etc. team who goes to Belgium, so it may simply be that someone has gotten the information wrong and thought that the whole production goes there. It would be more logical that they won't drag all the actors, etc. there as well, for the reasons you mentioned.
I saw the Vampires again a week ago. Máté Kamarás is an awesome Herbert, and I adore everyone there. A review should be coming, sooner or later.

You saw it with Mate! I'm really envious. Must have been very entertaining.
Kentaur + Belgian budget = bliss. However, I do not think it will be as simple as that. He's practically the only one unique to Budapest in the entire creative team so I hardly call his being exported cause for much announcement. Also, the article translates to something like "we'll be missing our vampires through winter 2009 because the show will have a guest visit in Belgium." Unless, they literally mean just the sets and costumes, I do not see how anyone's absence save that of the actors will paralyze the show.
Besides, if it will really run only for 4 months, then mounting a brand new production would be very impractical. They really would be better off letting the actors learn their roles in Dutch througout the year. I wouldn't call it impossible given that the 2 in Germany took only 4 months before they were fit to perform.
I guess it's pointless to discuss this now until we get more info. Such exciting news!

It will be interesting to see what comes out of this... I'm waiting until we get info in other language than Hungarian so that it will be easier to decipher what it says. Or until I can ask a native Hungarian to tell me for sure. Well, a Budapest-style production with Belgian budget would anyway be lots of joy, whoever performs there.
Mihálka György is a darling Alfred, by the way. I still prefer László, but György was very impressive especially considering how young he is. His voice is simply amazing, his acting is pretty good considering he hasn't done the role for a long time yet (and he is my type of Alfred, young, clueless, sweet and shy but not stupid, I can't stand dumb Alfreds), and he is cute as anything with adorable soft long-ish curls that Herberts liked playing with (Victor especially). And I must say again that voice is simply stunning. I've never heard such a good voice on an Alfred and rarely anywhere, and the boy is only 20. He'll be something, I'm sure of it. Hmm, now I have another reason to see Spring Awakening here (opening next month) than Szabó P. Szilveszter and Pirgel Dávid, as György is also in it.
And yeah, Máté was an adorable Herbert as. After having watched him as Death on the Vienna DVD, I couldn't have believed his Herbert would still be so young and sweet and innocent, and such a darling. Pirgel Dávid is still my favourite Herbert, but Máté was a real joy to see as well.
I tried to see Merán Bálint last weekend to check him out, but failed as they changed at last moment so Géza did both shows that day. Well, Géza is always great to see, and I much liked Nádorfi Krisztina as Sarah even if Zsanett remains my favourite.
Btw, I wish they made Stróbel Dóra the first cast Magda. I finally saw her and was so impressed. Even if Tímea isn't bad, Dóra is so much better, she needs to get to play the role more often.

I'm so glad that you liked Dora Strobel. I really thought she was amazing as well. Plus, she's just how I picture Magda would look like. Anyway, I finally understand what they mean by exporting the musical. According to this article here (final line) www.nepszava.hu//PrintArticle.asp?ArticleID=1139411&TranID=717324they are exporting the sets, the costumes, and the orchestra to 3 cities in Belgium next year... I consider it a brilliant move for the Belgian producers as this makes a 4 month run very lucrative. Imagine, their only real cost will be training their new actors. It's a pity they will be deprived of Geza though but this gives us maybe even a little hope of having Stanley take on the role.

Yesterday there was a musical gala in Miskolc with several Vámpírok Bálja cast members, and the Miskolc TV had a nice reportage of it with some interviews and, most interestingly, nice long video clips from the musical itself. (Well, the interviews are interesting too, but maybe not so much if you don't understand Hungarian.) With Egyházi Géza, Sánta László, Kamarás Máté, Nádorfi Krisztina and Kecskés Timea. You can watch it online. Quite lovely! mikom.hu/mivt.php?fi=a16585

thanks! Honestly...I prefered Maté as Herbert in Wien...in the hungarian production with that wig he looks more like Legolas than Herbert
