Do you happen to know when the cast recording is going to be released and where you can buy it? Right now, the only way to order it is to fax an order into Toho (the production company) and follow it up with a money order. To make things more annoying, they will only ship to Japanese addresses. Your best bet for getting a copy is to wait for copies to hit the Yahoo Auctions or to see if one of the board's Japanese members could order it for you. The cost will be around $60 once you add in bank transfer fees, paypal fees, and both domestic Japanese and international shipping.

Just a heads up for everyone, Toho have started shipping the CDs out. I don't have mine yet, but should soon (the person who ordered it for me in Japan received it and will be remailing it shortly).

Finally got the cast recording in today. I haven't had a chance to listen to it in full, but a few quick notes...
-The packaging is lame for a Japanese CD. It's a double width case, but they don't even give you an inset for the booklet, you have to keep it in loose between the discs.
-It looks like they used the Vienna edition of the show with a handful of the Hamburg/Berlin abridgements. Unless someone who saw it in person or has a *cough* can verify otherwise, it looks like they used the original Red Boots Ballet instead of the new Roten Stiefel/Stärker. This saddens me greatly, as Stärker is my favourite song in the entire show.
-Some of the track inclusions are odd. They include the sequence where they find Chagal in the wilderness and the full In der Gruft. I'd trade both for Stärker.
-I like what I've heard of the casts. Yes, plural. One Krolock/Alfred/Sarah pair is on each disc with two bonus tracks featuring the others (Nie Gesehn and Du bist wirklich on the first disc, Totale Finsternis and Für Sarah on the other). Abronsius sounds like a bitter old coot during "Wahrheit" and I'm certain that his lyrics have been simplified.
-Für Sarah is where it should be in the second act.
-The finale is abridged. This isn't a big deal because the Japanese version lacks the punch of the German edition, although I REALLY like the new arrangements.

I agree with all that you say, except that I really really dislike the Sarah in the 2nd disc whose name I have forgotten because I skip her songs. But I so agree about the CD cover.. I think Toho is seriously in need of a better graphic designer for their posters, CD covers and websites.

They should use Takarazuka's Graphic designers(they're awesome).

They should use Takarazuka's Graphic designers(they're awesome). I think you misunderstood what I said. I have a problem with the physical packaging (namely that the book and obi now rattle around loose in the case and potentially scratch up the disc). I like the designs quite a bit, especially the black and white images used of various paraphenalia (garlic necklace, chalice of holy water, etc.) FWIW, I forgot to mention this yesterday, the advert pack-ins were two very folded up promo posters for Les Miz and a 4-page advert for Marie Antoinette. There was also an ad for some local thing that I'm too lazy to go look up now. I also had a chance to listen through the album in more detail. While I'm not as fond of it as the Vienna cast recording, I like it a lot more than any of the Japanese Elisabeths. There's less vibrato and enka stylings in the performances, and the singing works better with the orchestra as a result. Other thoughts: -Yay, they kept the Jewish Vampire joke. I have no idea how anybody in Japan managed to understand it, though. -The lyrics in "Bücher, Bücher" are insanely simplified and rewritten. -The Latin in "Carpe Noctem" is now in Japanese -No "We drink your blood and then we eat your soul..." it's also in Japanese. -I don't mind either cast, they're both about the same. -The direction for Alfred in this production is incredibly boyish. He's not as restrained or nervous, but more skittish and exciteable. The sequence with Sarah getting him out of the bathroom before Einladung is a great example of this. -I really want the Japanese Fiddler on the Roof CD now because Chagal sounds a lot like I'd imagine a Japanese Tevye would.

Just a question, did they cut of the ending of Totale just like the Polish one? Its the line that goes:
VON KROLOCK: Nein, es wär verkehrt den Kopf zu verlieren. Wir woll'n nicht vor der Zeit den Genuß ruinieren. Mit jeder Stunde des Wartens wird die Lust mehr entfacht. Ich laß Dich fühlen, was Dich unsterblich macht, wenn wir zwei tanzen auf dem Ball morgen Nacht.

Just a question, did they cut of the ending of Totale just like the Polish one? Its the line that goes: That bit is on the Japanese CD and for both casts. I need to listen more closely next time through to find out why there's a minute lacking from the bonus track version. Also, the Polish CD appears to be focused on key songs and parts only, so that line may have been in the show but not on the CD.

Just a quick question: Is TdV still running in Tokyo and if not, when was the last show?
